Hi(gh) People.
Welcome to Tonitesite!
The home of Tonite.
(Did you know that the "T" of T-Shirt actually stands for Tonite?)
My name is Fergadelic (also known as Mr. T)
With the help of some friends, I make the brand Tonite.
Mainly, Tonite is T-Shirts, but increasingly we are going to be doing other cool stuff.
I'll start with a brief background, about me & how I got into doing this:
When I was 11 (& before that & after) I didn't like going to School.
I hated it, infact, but I used to love Monday mornings because that's when 2000 AD would arrive.
2,000 AD is an English comic, perhaps best known for it's leading character, Judge Dredd.
I credit 2,000 AD (& my mum, for getting me the subscription!) for awakening something in me.
It had style & humour & it came straight from the future.
It's the first place that I engaged with Pop Culture & I knew that in some way this was where I belonged.
On a subconcious level I also absorbed the idea that there could be a life in art, not just in consuming it, but in making it.
& yet I had no concept of a career in art, it was more like an escape hatch;
one that I could draw myself & then open into an exciting New World.
I was already a drawing addict, but now I developed a particular interest in cool characters & bold logos.
I drew Judge Dredd a lot, trying to copy the styles of Mike McMahon, Brian Bolland & Carlos Ezquerra.
Music came into my life a bit later, but with equal impact.
From my sister I inherited tapes of Jean Michel Jarre & his Spatial Soundscapes, heard through the walkman that was welded to my ears, helped me to lift off into orbit.
& then everything went Purple...I discovered Prince & I went mad for his Sound, his Look, the whole Purpleverse!
Other music flooded in - notably Van Halen - & meanwhile I had discovered Heavy Metal magazine & it's new wave of 80s Underground Comix.
These Comix & the Music became as one, a whole sphere of conciousness, the Look & the Sound united.
Fast forward a few years & I got into skating.
It was through skating that a 3rd element was added, the Pop culture that I'd loved through Art & Music was made manifest in the streets;
in an activity & a lifestyle.
Through skating I got into T-Shirts, at first making home-made copies (of the Gator op-art vortex & of Pushead's Zorlac shrunken skull).
At this time - still in High school - I did my first professional artwork: for Slam City Skates & Rough Trade.
I did a few ads in Viz comic for them in return for Stickers & a Hoodie & I think some shop credit, I was STOKED...hah!
Unwittingly, I had embarked on my career & the start of a long relationship with Slam City.
I went on to do an Art Foundation course & then a Degree.
Work for Slam had fallen off, but I would still jokingly nag about doing stuff for them.
By total coincidence, just as I graduated with the worst possible grade, they were starting their own clothing label,
to be called "Holmes" & so I got involved with that, helping to shape the look & concept.
Over the next few years, I also worked on Good Enough, Very Ape , Hysteric Glamour & X Girl Japan.
Eventually, Holmes became Silas & I worked on the launch of that, too.
Following it's success, I was given the opportunity to do my own thing;
with the help of Sofi & Russell of Silas, I started Tonite in 2001.
A good, futuristic year for new beginnings.
My mission then was much as it is now:
To make stuff for the Freaks!...wether they were Rockers or Ravers, or Punx or Hippies or Skaters or just Deep Space Travellers!
I LOVE T-Shirts & Streetwear & Music & Comix.
I want to make stuff that comes from the Heart, that people can wear with pride.
Our Tribe grows!
Along the way, I've also worked...
With the Showstudio website (my section's still archived on their first entry, it's old now, but I still like it).
With my friends & mentors P.A.M.
I've done record covers for Royal Trux & the mighty Chrome Hoof.
& I've recently done a very fruitful collaboration with Paul Smith.
I am part of The Changes, an Inter Spatial Art Collective, with the P.A.M.s & Skatething from Bape.
We continue to occasionally Exhibit & Party.
As well as Drawing (which is still an abiding obsession), I love Tattooing & playing the Drumz.
I am the Drummer in Die Verboten, vinyl coming soon!
